In rural and urban areas Haitian women propose economic strategies for this transition, in the sense of building agroecology, solidarity economy, and food sovereignty, goals that can only be achieved through the people’s self-determination and a people’s government. From across the Americas, women continue to stand in internationalist, anti-imperialist solidarity for a dignified, sovereign Haiti free from occupation.
European Parliament votes on GMOs/NGTs and seeds: Repeated violations of peasants’ rights, says ECVC

ECVC strongly condemns the vote in favour of the proposal to deregulate GMOs obtained with new genomic techniques (NGTs). This position of Parliament, which is based on empty promises on traceability, labelling and patentability of NGT plants , is unacceptable for small farmers in Europe.

Tunisia: Million Rural Women stand in solidarity with the land struggles in Siliana

In 2021, peasants in Siliana, notably in Henshir Laqasba, contested land speculation. A prolonged sit-in by workers and farmers led to arrests. Among nine peasants facing trial is also the peasant leader of the ‘Million Rural Women and Landless Association’. The trial continues since 2021.

Similar past interventions introduced leadership and policies supposedly to alleviate the crisis but, only made it worse. A solution from its people is already there.
El Salvador: Peasant movements call for UNDROP-based policies to check rising rural poverty

El Salvador has experienced a recession in agriculture, marked by a rise in rural poverty from 22.8% to 26.6% (2019-2022) in total poverty, and from 4.5% to 8.6% in extreme poverty. Additionally, maize cultivation decreased by at least 10,000 hectares between 2019 and 2022.

Little has changed in Brazil’s context of rural violence. According to a report called Conflicts Booklet (Caderno de Conflitos), published by the Pastoral Land Commission (Comissão Pastoral da Terra), 973 rural conflicts occurred in the first half of 2023, most of which (791) were struggles for land. This represents an 8% increase in comparison to the same period in 2022.

In light of this declaration’s importance and possible effects on farming communities, ESAFF Uganda participated in the special council session with the town council members to discuss and present UNDROP on April 17, 2024, in Ttamu division, Mityana district.
